As the golden orb of day relinquished its hold on the sky, I, Hercules, champion of chew toys and connoisseur of steak, prepared for an adventure of a lifetime—or at least one to boast about tomorrow at the park. The air held the sweet promise of freedom as my humans slumbered. I flexed my formidable muscles and bounded through the doggie door, a gateway to Pawsburgh, under the cloak of stars.

My escapade began as I trotted toward Weimaraner Woods, but the wind carried whispers of a grand gathering at Chestnut Cocker Courtyard. Now, parties aren’t my usual affair; I prefer the rustle of leaves underpaw to the clinking of collars. But tonight, the night pulses with the thrill of the novel, the charm of the yet-to-be-discovered, and I’m no dog to turn his back on adventure.

My thoughts turn to Margaux and Coco, surely they’d be there. With them, even a simple roll in the grass becomes an event worth tail-telling.

However, lo and behold, as I approached, I noticed the courtyard wasn’t bustling with the usual yaps and yowls of a soiree but with a cacophony of disgruntled barks. Turns out, I had stumbled upon a culinary catastrophe; a delivery dog had mixed up orders between Retriever’s Restaurant and Shepherd’s Shawarma, leaving a group of uptown hounds with nothing but vegan vittles.

Their distressed whimpers filled the air. I couldn’t help my chuckle—after all, my disdain for greens is notorious. A vegan feast for me would be less welcome than a cat at a kennel club.

But then, affected by the contagious canine chaos, I rallied. It was time for Hercules to live up to his name. “Fear not,” I announced, each syllable a bark of confidence. “Hercules shall remedy this lamentable leaf-fest!”

I pawedede my way to The Fetching Feline Pet Emporium, where they surely had confusion of another sort. The name is a cunning ruse to deter over-curious pups, but I know it to be a front for the best stashed meats in town. I sauntered in, only to be greeted by a rambunctious Persian playing with a thread ball—the proprietor’s pet project.

“What calamity brings Pawsburgh’s bravest bul-dog to my lair?” the cat purred with a mocking grin.

I huffed, inflating my chest. “The fate of tonight’s celebration rests upon your tender shoulders, feline. Hand over your hidden ham, your secret steak, and we may yet save the evening.”

Unexpectedly, the Persian agreed, commanding his mousey minions to pile up packets of pastrami, stacks of steaks, and even, to my horror, a trim of turkey. “Meow you owe me, Hercules,” he said, words cotton-wrapped but claw-sharp.

Armed with my bounty, I returned to the Courtyard to a hero’s welcome as the hounds howled in delight at the sight of actual meat. My mission was a success, but as I watched the feast, a shadow of doubt passed over me like a dark cloud.

Sure enough, I’d been well hoodwinked. The steak was decoyed for devious dog food—the turkey trimmed with tofu. I watched as the Pawsburgh elite munched mouthfuls of masquerading “meat.”

I ponder my options—a brawl with the Felidae? An admittance of catastrophe? Instead, I chose the path of most resistance—I turned to the Deli, seeking true redemption.

The night was saved, eventually, but not without a lesson learned: Never trust a cat with your steak, not when Margaux and Coco could lend a paw. And as for the vegan spread? Well, let’s just say it turns out kale isn’t so bad… if it’s wrapped around a bite of bratwurst.
