As the first blush of dawn painted the sky a hazy pink, a meticulous rummage through the toy basket by me, Nezuko—or Baby Dawg—unearthed not my treasured squeaky hedgehog but rather a pressing puzzle. He had vanished without so much as a farewell squeak, defying the cozy order of my corner in Pawsburgh. A detective’s spirit awoke within me, and I resolved that today was not to be an ordinary day.

With a stretch and a yawn, I sauntered down Affenpinscher Avenue, my keen senses on alert. Sprout, the Spaniel, wagged alongside me, caught up in the thrill of the chase. Thimble, the Maine Coon, perched on the second-story ledge of The Barking Boutique, cast a knowing glance downward—he too sensed the urgency.

“You look ruffled, Nezuko. Hot on the scent?” Thimble mewed sagaciously.

“My hedgehog, gone,” I announced with a tone tinged by loss and determination. “I suspect foul play in Pawsburg.”

Exchanging nods, Sprout and I proceeded towards Amber Akita Alley, where the first clues might surface. The Alley teemed with the tail-wagging bustle of morning activity as I nosed through the throng, seeking any sign of my cherished plaything.

It was outside Puppy Plate, the aromas of the day’s specials mingling with the city scents, where I picked up a familiar squeal, muffled yet distinctly my hedgehog’s cry. We darted inside, Sprout and I interrogating every patron with a questioning sniff—a scent trail led us to a secluded table where a Husky sat, enjoying a breakfast heap of chicken and apple hash—a scent combination most enticing if it weren’t for my search. The Husky blinked, unaware of his seat’s fugitive hideaway.

“But Husky, in Pawsburg, we sniff out the truth. No mystery too minor to solve,” I chided gently, reclaiming my precious hedgehog.

Thimble prowled in just then, a smirk in his whiskers. “All’s well that ends well, I suppose. Another case closed by the Baby Dawg.”

With my detective duties dutifully done, we ambled to Doggone Deli, my hedgehog now secure beneath my paw. As Sprout and Thimble reveled in recounting our morning’s caper to curious pups and kitties, I indulged in golden chunks of chicken, steering clear of the citrus garnish that dared intrude on my platter.

A game of wits, a victory of senses—just a day in the life for a dog like me. My friends adjourned, their bellies and hearts full, while I sought the solace of my sun-warmed home corner. There, under the loving gaze of my artist human, my hedgehog and I hunkered down.
