Hey mom, found myself on a strange island with a talking tennis ball and a bunch of other pets, kinda like Survivor but fluffier. Weathered some trials, even won a few (who knew fetch would pay off someday?). Missing my Spencerville comfort, but doing alright. One moment I was having a good round of hide and pounce on Sinbad, the next, I found myself on an island which quite bizarrely looked like a gigantically oversized squeaky ball. I don’t remember how I got here, and I didn’t get a paw-chart or a welcome brochure, just a possibly artificial intelligence with a rather annoying voice that was embedded in a floating tennis ball, droning on about something called a Survivor challenge. This survival thing sounded doubly suspicious when I remembered the last time was when I accidentally let the human wash me. I sighed. This day was promising to be a challenge.

One look around confirmed that I wasn’t alone, there was a menagerie of critters – each one stranger than the last. Look, there’s Kahkseh challenging a straight out of Brindle Brown Boxer Beach, Boxer to an arm-wr… um, paw-wrestling match.

Kids seemed to be running the place, their shrill laughter piercing our natural serenity. On most occasions, I would have bolted or hid behind Sinbad. But right now, such luxuries were miles away.

The place buzzed with activity as we inched closer to the ultimate non-edible prize, cautiously keeping an eye on each other. Furry lodgers who get eliminated, they said, are sent back home. Now there’s motivation.

The first challenge was simple and laid up my alley – a fetching contest. The task was dump to an assortment of antlers, lambchop plushies and squeaky balls into the South Poodle Pond and have us retrieve them. Not a problem for a seasoned professional like me. Had the art of retrieval been a respected profession in Spencerville, I would be a fetching savant. I reveled in the game, bringing back the maximum number of toys. As I carried back the last squeaky ball, I felt a rush of joy hit me, for a change, it wasn’t the brats laughing.

Post-victory, the rest of the day passed in a whirl of reminiscences of the quaint town of Spencerville. I missed my bed and a lot more than I cared to admit. The lights from the Chow Down Chow Chow and Barkery flickered in my mind, along with the aroma of juicy chicken bones luring me in.

Day two brought rain, and my enthusiasm took a dive. My memories this time were less comforting. The dreaded vet, the imposing vacuum cleaner, those piercing raindrops. My courage wavered. But then it seemed the artificial intelligence shared a similar fear. It fizzled out with a faulty exhaustion before we even reached the Choco Chihuahua Castle, leaving us in a chaotic freedom.

And there I was, the Shepherd-Corso, top of the leaderboard, with comfort being my victory lap. But as all this was happening around me, I couldn’t help but yearn for our sweet Spencerville. No amount of squeaky balls could replicate the comfort of home. But don’t tell the kids here. And whilst you’re at it, don’t let them know that I’ve hidden the replacement AI ball under a mound in my designated corner. I could use some quiet on this oversized squeaky ball Island.
