Well, you wouldn’t believe it if I told you, but dear ol’ Lambeau – yes, that big dopey German shepherd and beagle mix, with the ears that couldn’t make up their bleedin’ minds – had done the most extraordinary thing.

It all started one casual afternoon over at Pup-Tastic Pizza. We’d all gathered around our usual booth. Myself, Rosie, Max and a whole heap of Lambeau’s shepherd-beagle brethren. We never paid much heed to the hullabaloo of noisy pups around, too engrossed in our extra cheesy slices. The joint was quite a decent haunt, I’ll have you know. Not the Ritz mind you, but its homely charm wasn’t lost on us.

While Lambeau was wrestling with his slice (and mind you, he’s a dog’s dog that one, every bit shepherd and beagle fused into a likeable, lovable oddity), his floppy ear swept across the table, hitting a fork and sending it clattering onto a dish. The sound created was uncannily like a note – sharp, clear, musical. A sudden hush followed, and every head turned to stare at our table, at Lambeau to be exact.

Behind the counter, Johnny the work-experience pup’s eyes were alight. He dashed across the room, his tail a frantic plume of excitement, and enthused, “do it again!”

Of course, Lambeau looked every bit the perplexed protagonist. He didn’t have the foggiest what Johnny was on about. But being a sport, Lambeau ambled over to an unoccupied fork; a leap of faith, mind you. His ear hit the metal in the exact same magical way, and voila!

Before I knew it, we’d gathered around the makeshift piano, as forks were laid out and Lambeau, with an elegance you wouldn’t attribute to his hulking form, was playing beautiful symphonies using just his floppy ears and a set of stainless steel.

How he pulled it off, I’ll never know- but I suppose that’s the mystery of Lambeau. Always the dark horse that one, poker-faced under his confusion, but you could never really tell what he’s really about.

And just like that, our Spencerville band was born, on a whim, formed around Lambeau – the floppy-eared virtuoso.

Over time, the sounds began attracting more animals, birds would flock to Pup-Tastic Pizza to lend a tweet or two. Max, who had quite the baritone for a Labrador, headed the vocals while Rosie was surprisingly deft with the harmonica.

Of course it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Mock ducks would occasionally fly across the air as disgruntled critics let out their frustration. Paws-A-Latte became overrun with catty stars wanting to be part of the phenomenon. But through all that racket, we persisted.

Yes, it was noisy, messy, and absolutely insane. But it was also the most fun Spencerville had seen in years. No longer are the streets quiet as they once were, Lambeau’s spirited barks have been replaced with melodious tunes. We’ve turned into the darn pet rendition of the High School Musical but, you know what, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even while I write this tale from the exquisite comfort of the Lower Golden Gate Gardens, my heart swells with pride.

Ah! To be young and a pet in the golden age of the Spencerville pet musical!
