Welcome to Spencerville, where an ordinary day ain’t so ordinary—not if you’re living, as I am, in the fur-filled abundance of Vincent, that is. Vincent, my old friend, is a black and white splattered piece of dusk, a Newfoundland with more heart than his body knows what to do with. Yes, he’s bigger than your run-of-the-mill, but if you ask me, there’s no better canine colossus to share a couch with.

Morning finds us sprawled on the living room couch, his favorite place in our quaint Spencerville dwelling. Vincent’s eyelids just a crack open, peeking with fond expectancy at the day ahead. With a grace and quiet that belies his size, he stands, stretches, and decides it’s high time to rattle some kitchen cupboards. The flour bags and pasta boxes may not take kindly to his rummaging, but it puts a skip in Vincent’s step, and I can’t help but chuckle.

We take our breakfast together. I contented with my coffee, him dreaming of Fishy Bites from his favorite eatery or a crunchy biscuit from Pooched Potatoes. But it’s the nightly dental bone that has him slobbering in anticipation. I know it. He knows it. It’s a silent pact between us, sealed with cheerful sniffs and tail wagging.

As I head to The Doggy Depot for the day, a flicker of dismay clouds Vincent’s face. He never liked to be alone, that boy. “I’ll be back soon, old chum,” I reassure him, tousling the white freckles on his ink-black head. He knows this but bless him, he worries. His sister, Victoria, a Saint Bernard of good humor and immense fluff, attempts to distract him, but I’m usually the talk of the town until I return.

Dinnertime means more food frolic but also signals the cherished grooming hour. I take Vincent to The Dapper Dog Salon. He stands there, dignified and trembling slightly, detesting the whole process but enduring it for me and the town. ‘Cause, after all, a good lookin’ lad like him needs to maintain his image, right?

As evening swaddles Spencerville, we take our leisurely stroll to Fawn Cream Maltese Meadow, our tails wrapped around each other in silent camaraderie. We bask in the serenity, every now and then casting patient glances westward.

You see, I promised Vincent that we’d be reunited. With his original family, I mean. And, in the hushed whispers of the wind, I swear I can hear them. Hear them breathing a sweet promise of a reunion, an enduring bond… Hear them reassure that, in Spencerville, love transcends the finite boundaries of life.

The stars twinkle in agreement, casting their age-old blessings. And, as we return to our quiet abode, side by side, heart by heart, I know… In good time, in kind patience… love will guide us through. All of us, together.
